December 12th Meeting

Steven Hull will be presenting the subject below during the next North Fulton ARES Meeting, December 12th at 7:00 PM at Fellowship Bible Church on Crossville Road in Roswell, Georgia. Please join us if you would like to venture into the world of digital communications. This might stimulate you to purchase an Icom radio.

Steven Hull (KW4HQ) got D-Rats over RF working. Turns out to be a complicated setup..vs something like FLDIGI. Every D-Star radio has a serial port that must be set to something like 9600 and GPS must be OFF. There is no "sound card" to configure either, data is already serialized.

For my IC-7100, this was the settings (took me about 20 tries to figure this out!)
- Go into dRats and click on file, preferences, then click radio.
Add an entry for your rig, use:
- give it name (I used IC-7100)
- select type = serial
- set it to 9600
- select your com port.
And your done as far as dRats goes. Select the radio now when using dRats.
Note - The IC-7100 has two COM ports it creates when plugging into a computer, like Com 6 and Com 7 for my machine. One port is for sound (not needed) and the other is for Serial, which was COM 7..
Now for the tricky part - setting up the radio.

Set up the Dv DATA mode:
Press Set
Select DV Set
Select DV Data TX
Set to AUTO
Make sure DV is automatically selected when detected:
Press Set
Select DV Set
Select DV Auto Detect
Set to ON
Make sure GPS is off: (not that an IC-7100 had one anyways)
Press Set
Select GPS Set
Select GPS Select
Set to OFF
Enable the USB data modulation:
Press Set
Press Connectors
Select DATA MOD
Set USB
Enable the USB2 Data Function:
Press Set
Press Connectors
Select USB2! .DATA1 Fuction
Select USB2 Fuction
Set to DV data

* NOTE! DO NOT USE Data 1 fuction, this is where I lost so much time! Had to use a serial monitor to figure this out. Data1 Function should be OFF and USB2 function shold be showing DV Data. This will not affect anything else (like fldigi) unless your using the old school round connector with a special cable on back of the IC-7100.
Make sure the GPS port is not sending fake data thru dStar:
Press Set
Press Connectors
Select USB2.DATA1 Fuction
Select GPS Out
Set to OFF
Enable 9600 mode:
Press Set
Press Connectors
Select USB2.DATA1 Fuction
Select DV Data/GPS Out Baud
Set to 9600
Enable 9600 serial port speed:
Press Set
Press Connectors
Select 9600bps Mode
Set to ON
Hope this helps.
